Premature degradation is usually caused by liquid water carryover combined with high pressure changes. If the pre-filters fail, liquid water droplets hit the dry alumina bed directly. Under rapid repressurization, this causes thermal and mechanical stress, leading to bead cracking and fracturing. In Canada’s freezing temperatures, any retained liquid water within the pores freezes and expands, destroying the material structure. Selecting a grade with higher crush strength (>160 N) and using a proper support bed of ceramic balls reduces this risk.
The removal process works through chemisorption. The surface of the activated alumina is treated to become positively charged. When water passes through the filter bed, the negatively charged fluoride ions swap places with hydroxide ions on the alumina surface. This process works best within a pH range of 5.5 to 6.5. Outside of this range, the surface charge changes, which reduces the material's adsorption capacity.
For heated desiccant dryers, regeneration typically requires heating a dry purge gas to between 160°C and 250°C (320°F to 482°F) and passing it through the bed. The heat breaks the physical bonds between the water molecules and the alumina surfaces. This is followed by a cooling cycle with dry air to return the bed to operating temperatures. Ensuring the cooling air is dry is critical; otherwise, the alumina will re-adsorb water before the drying cycle even begins.
Each batch undergoes testing prior to shipment to ensure it meets specifications for crush strength, surface area, and moisture content. We pack our materials in moisture-resistant super sacks or steel drums to protect them from ocean humidity during transit. Testing reports (COA) are provided with every order to ensure full traceability and compliance with Canadian industrial standards.
