The kinetic diameter of Nitrogen ($N_2$, 3.64 Å) versus Oxygen ($O_2$, 3.46 Å) does not differ enough to be separated by size exclusion alone. Instead, zeolite molecular sieves, particularly lithium-exchanged (LiX) and calcium-exchanged (CaX or CaA) structures, utilize the nitrogen molecule's quadrupole moment. Due to this quadrupole moment, nitrogen interacts much more strongly with the extra-framework exchangeable metal cations in the zeolite's structural cages than oxygen. Through Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) or Vacuum Pressure Swing Adsorption (VPSA) processes, these zeolites generate a continuous flow of highly concentrated oxygen (ranging from 93% to over 95% purity).
